Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a problem with your sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in your body that helps control muscles in your legs. The sciatic nerve is also responsible for sensation in your legs and soles of your feet. The nerve’s pathway extends from your lower back to your hips, butt, and down each leg.

Sciatica commonly occurs when a herniated disc presses on nerve tissue, resulting in debilitating pain on one side of your body.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

The following signs and symptoms may indicate you have sciatica:

  • Lower back pain
  • Numbness or tingling in your leg or foot
  • Weakness
  • Pain radiating down one leg
  • Pain on one side of your body
  • Discomfort anywhere along the sciatic nerve’s pathway
  • Mild, aching pain
  • Burning or sharp pain
  • A feeling of an electric shock or jolt
  • Pain when coughing or sneezing

Sciatica often results from a herniated spinal disc or bone overgrowth within your vertebrae. It may also occur because of a tumor. Your risk of developing sciatica increases with older age, obesity, carrying heavy loads, diabetes, and sitting for prolonged periods of time.

How is sciatica diagnosed?

To diagnose sciatica, Dr. Getachew reviews your symptoms and medical history. She completes a physical exam to check your reflexes and muscle strength. Makda Chiropractic Health Center specialists may also use imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or electromyography, which is a test that measures electrical nerve impulses.
